A Visit to Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR)

The very first Social Empowerment through Work and Action (SEWA) project of the academic year 2015-2016 was ‘Road Safety and Obeying Traffic Rules’.  Keeping the purpose of SEWA and the specific project requirements in mind, the teachers of Arwachin International School organized an educational visit to Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR), Loni Road, to sensitize the children towards the important issues of Road Safety and Traffic Rules and make them responsible individuals.

After ironing out a lot of details, a two and a half hour visit was organized for the students. This was a two day visit- Classes 3A1 and 3A2 went on the 24th and classes 4A and 5A went on the 25th April, 2015. The session began with an interactive conversation between the students and the organizing team, where they were shown a PPT regarding road safety and were asked various questions about traffic rules, that is- different kinds of ‘challans’ that are applicable, the proper way to ride in a bus, car or even a cycle or what do they think is a safe or an unsafe act on a road? After accessing students’ knowledge, they were shown short videos to drive the message home. After a 45 minute session, the children were taken down to the driving track where they walked and saw road signs, traffic light, different types of lanes and dividers on the road etc. They also inspected a learner’s car and were made to understand how a dual control car works.

After a walk on the track, the children settled in for a short 20 min movie called “pehla kadam”, a story about a boy who doesn’t like following traffic rules and how he later realizes his mistakes and pledges to correct them. Soon after the movie, a short quiz was conducted by the IDTR team to test our children’s knowledge. As a participation gift to those children who were active throughout the session, the IDTR team conducted a small lucky draw and gave the selected ones ‘IDTR Caps’ as a memento.

The educational visit to IDTR was successful, as the students got an opportunity to walk the roads and observe the signs and lanes up-close, without the fear of traffic. They were also provided with additional information regarding being safe on the roads and other rules and regulations. All in all, we are thankful to Institute of Driving and Traffic Research (IDTR) for providing our school students with such an opportunity, which helped our children to grow into dependable beings. They learnt to be responsible individuals and also pledged to impart the same knowledge to their parents and neighbours.
