A visit to the Big Bazar
On Saturday, the 19th of Oct’13, the students of class 1 to 3 went on an educational excursion to Big Bazar. The visit was undertaken keeping in mind the ongoing topic-Shelter and community. The mall and the departmental store, being a part of our community, served as a great tool for the students to learn about several topics related to the unit. They learned about the people who help us, how the store maintains its stock, how the cash counter works, what is use of a bar code on the products and what are the details that we find on a price tag. The students of class 1 noted down the details like- the price, the weight/size, the bar code number and the other specifications mentioned on the price tag of several items themselves. They went on all the floors one-by-one and jotted down the details in their journals. They were asked to compare prices of various items and then say which was more costly. The students of class 3 gained knowledge about the modus operandi of such a shopping destination. The children were amazed to see around 40,000 Sales Keeping Units (SKU) on display. They not only enquired about the day to day work style, timings, the manpower and the security measures taken by the store to avoid any pilferage but also gathered information on the segregation and disposal of waste and the energy saving techniques like the use of low wattage light bulbs, the motion sensor light bulbs and the installation of skylights and solar panels.
The students also got to see how the products or items are categorized and set in different departments/sections like- the clothes section had sub-divisions for Men’s, Women’s and Children’s, the house utilities were divided into-electronics, furniture and kitchen items and so on. They talked to the staff there and asked several questions too.
When we came back to school, we had a general class discussion based on the visit and then the students were encouraged to write a few lines about their visit.
The team of Big Bazar was very happy to have had us as their visitors too. They really enjoyed our visit and answered the students’ queries with great ease. They found our children very knowledgeable and well behaved.
Over all, the visit was a great success and we all enjoyed it thoroughly.
