WALK INTO ACTION

(Conference on Child Abuse and Interventions)

 On 10th October 2015, House of Learning held an open conference on Child Abuse at Shah Auditorium in civil lines called ‘Walk into Action’. This conference was held in association with Shri Ram Foundation, Delhi Legal Services Authority and NGO Saakar.

Mr. Talwant Singh, District and Sessions Judge in Delhi and Ms. Swati Maliwal, Chairperson of Delhi Commission for Women were the Guests of Honour. As the event began, both of them delivered prominent speeches. Mr. Singh spoke on the live threat of cyber bullying that is part of our life these days. He spoke on how important the role of the parents is and how they must always be vigilant. Ms. Swati is an activist and spends most of her days travelling from one part of the city to the other making sure that  women and little girls get their legal rights and women who are rescued are safe in our legal system. She spoke about the cases where women being so close to police were still living in hazardous conditions and were being completely ignored by the authority. She highlighted the loop holes in our system and wanted the government to work towards making our legal system better.

Other esteemed guests who served as panelists were     Ms. Bhavna Barmi,     Sr. Clinical Psychologist, Mr. Ashok Pandey, Principal of Ahlcon International School, Mr. Ajay Chaudhary, Joint Commissioner, OSD to honourable Lieutenant Governor, Mr. Jitendra Singh and Mr. Vijay Jha, Secretary, Delhi legal services authority and finally Mr. Sandeep Sehgal, Senior Journalist and President of Saakar NGO.

The panelists discussed the psychological and physical effects of child abuse on children, the different legal interventions available to parents and schools to help them deal with such incidents with more ease.

The panel was knowledgeable and highlighted cases that made the social problem of child abuse more real for the present audience and the interventions helped them to feel empowered and gave them hope.
