PRE-WRITING SKILL WORKSHOP
Young children's hand skills
are generally on the decline resulting in fine motor delays and poor
handwriting skills especially in students with special needs. Today's children
are no longer exposed to activities and toys that develop the musculature, hand
structures and precise movements of the hands needed for school success.
As a result, children are
coming into the classroom with delayed fine motor control. Yet, curriculum
demands continue to increase, thus producing a widening gap between curriculum
expectations and developmental readiness.
The three days Pre Skills
Workshop that was conducted by Manovikas Institute for Higher Education (MIHE)
from 29.July.2016 (Friday) to 31st. July.2016 (Sunday) has special
status of Continuing Rehabilitation Education (CRE) of the Rehabilitation
Council of India (RCI). This Workshop provided the therapist, educator and
parent with a thorough understanding of hand development and its role in the
promotion of fine motor skills that lead to handwriting.
The workshop aimed at preparing its
attendees to identify foundational hand skills, recognize specific deficits
in hand skill development. It also helped to recognize
pre-writing skills and age appropriateness for each skill.
The workshop brought together a great panel of people to
train its attendees. Dr. Deepti Ahuja, Occupational Therapist, Amity
University, Dr. Archana Singh, Art Therapist, USA, Ms. Payal Banerjee, Movement
Therapist, and finally Ms. Tanu Chandna, Special Educator, UDAI.It was a wonderful
three day training, which left us feeling more empowered and confident to do
our jobs in a better way. It was a
very fruitful workshop.
