    Workshop on Differentiated Teaching

    -By Margaret Warner

Arwachin International School organized a workshop on “Use of assessment data to plan for a differentiated class” for the teachers on 26th November,2016.  The aim of the workshop was to understand the link between assessment and lesson planning and to be able to use the assessment data to meet the needs of all the students.

The resource person of the workshop was Margaret Warner who is an eminent writer and practitioner of this concept. During the session the teachers were asked to consider various assessment methods, gather information about any one class taught by them, think about special educational needs of the students and use that information to plan a lesson that is differentiated, catering to the individual needs.

The focus should be the students and their learning pattern and not the syllabus and teaching. Lots of videos based on differentiated learning were shown. The teachers were taught how to plan the same lesson for different students by making different types of questions keeping in mind the specific needs of the students.

In the second-half, the teachers were asked to make a lesson plan on a particular topic by designing different activities for four different categories of the students. Towards the end of the activity the teachers understood how to improvise the worksheets and activities to cater to the individual needs.

The session was very interactive and a thought-provoking one. It also enabled the teachers to share their subject-specific activities with others. It ingrained the fact in them that teaching is a two-way learning process for the students and the teachers both.
