VISITING JAPAN-A LIFETIME EXPERIENCE
Saint Augustine has truly said “the world is a book, and those who do not travel, read only a page.” As I returned to India after spending seven months in Japan as an ASIA KAKEHASHI exchange student, I felt that my suitcase was heavier than when I was leaving India. It had been filled with unforgettable memories with friends from over 20 Asian countries, experiences that taught me crucial life lessons, confidence and the ability to conquer almost any obstacle, and excitement to use my experience to give back to my school and community.
It all started a year ago when I, Deepal Yadav of class 12B was informed by my Japanese teacher, Mrs Vandana Jain, about a seven month long Japanese government funded exchange programme, ASIA KAKEHASHI PROJECT, to Japan.
In Japanese, “Kakehashi” means building bridges. TheASIA KAKEHASHI Project is a government-funded student exchange program to Japan for engaging, focused and customized experiences conducted by American Field Services (AFS) Japan which is appointed by the National Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology (MEXT),Japan to run the project, focused on facilitating intercultural exchange and understanding between teenagers in Japan and 20 other Asian countries. A speech by Prime Minister Shinzo Abe at the banquet of the 23rd International Conference on ‘The Future of Asia’ on Monday, June 5, 2017 stated that Japan will provide opportunities for Asian high school students studying Japanese to live in Japan at a scale of 1,000 students over the next five years.
I decided to give it a try and the next thing I knew, I had gone through a series of interviews, essays and home visits. Finally, I received the selection email. Having studied Japanese for more than 11 years at my school I had developed immense love for the Japanese culture, their technology, varied heritage, animation etc which had also led to my first visit to Japan in 2018 for a week, through another Japanese government funded program. After learning about my selection, I was filled with ecstasy about being able to live my dream.
I landed in Japan with 16 other students from various parts of India. None of us knew what to expect but we were all enthusiastic to take on whatever was coming our way. After two days of orientation in Tokyo, the capital of Japan, along with 200 students from over 20 Asian countries, I left for my prefecture, Hokkaido. Hokkaido is the largest and coldest prefecture in Japan. I had a total of seven host families. It was quite difficult adjusting with every host family for the initial few days but at the end all the host families had something different to teach me.Each of them had something different to offer me. Each family had their own customs, their own beliefs and mindset, each one of them had something unique for me to learn from.
Hokkaido, being surrounded by the Sea of Japan from one side and the Pacific Ocean from the other, had marvellous beaches and snow, starting from November itself with temperature reachingup to minus 20 degrees which gave me an opportunity to go skiing with my friends. I got the chance to admire the flora and fauna exclusive to Japan.Penguins, whales, dolphins, wild bears and regular encounters with deer and red foxes was something I’ll never forget.
This golden opportunity showed me the difference between ‘studying’ and ‘learning’ , that really boosted my confidence in my ability to speak and understand Japanese, experience authentic Japanese culture, get to know what it’s like to live in freezing cold environment , how to use chopsticks, travel around Japan, be awe of Japan’s breath-taking landscapes, understand why Japan is a leader in technology, acquire knowledge of so many cultures from across the world, make friends for life, savour Japanese cuisine and transform myself into a better version of myself. I believe I have become more appreciative of the nature around me, open to new ideas and ready to become a global leader of change in my nation.
I would like to express my sincere gratitude towards my respected Principal Mrs.Swapna Nair, my Japanese teacher Mrs. Vandana Jain, my class teacher Mrs. Shruti Mishra and all my subject teachers who aided me throughout my time in Japan and without whom this once in a life opportunity would not have been fulfilled.
Proud moment for Arwachin International School our respected Principal Mrs SWAPNA NAIR has been awarded with IUEF STREE SHAKTI COMBATANT SAMMAN 2020 for contributions in the field of Educational excellence and to the society at large along with women from various fields who have contributed remarkably in their own fields and carved a niche for themselves including the women from armed forces and various other professions.

ARWACHINIAN SHINES IN TIMES SPARK CONTEST; WINS RS. 1 LAC
TIMES SPARK: READ TO LEAD
BY THE TIMES OF INDIA
"To learn to read is to light a fire, every syllable that is spelled out is a spark."
- Victor Hugo
THE WINNER SPEAKS……..
Times SPARK (Scholarship Programme for Awareness, Reasoning and Knowledge) is a commendable initiative by the Times of India group in order to inculcate the habit of reading among the budding youth of India. This is a prestigious scholarship programme which tests the students not on their ability to cram facts, but on their perspectives about national and international issues. The goal of this initiative is to produce responsible, socially aware young citizens who will proceed to lead the world towards a better future.
Beginning on Teachers' Day in September last year, an article a day was highlighted in TOI over three months for the students to analyse. The topics were wide ranging: from contemporary issues, politics, science and technology to literature and the fine arts. At the end of 90 days, the students were tested on what they had read. The students who cleared the final examination were then put through a round of interviews before the judges made their final choices.
Of the whopping 2 lakh students who participated in the programme, 300 of the brightest minds from the length and breadth of the country were chosen as winners.
I am pleased to say that I, Shruthi Rao, from Arwachin International am one of the recipients of the Times SPARK scholarship of Rs. 1 lac. It was an enriching journey and the experience has left me a more knowledgeable global citizen. I prepared meticulously for the exam, conducted on January 7, 2018. Having successfully cleared the online test, I was shortlisted for the interview, wherein I was judged on my personality and my knowledge from a global perspective, specifically on creative solutions that make the world a better and sustainable place for our race.
My joy knew no bounds when the results were declared as I saw my face featured among the list of Times SPARK Scholarship winners printed in the national edition of The Times Of India on March 17. I feel extremely honoured to be counted among the cream of the crop alongside my peers. It was a moment of pride for me, my family, and my teachers alike.
I would like to extend my gratitude to all the English language teachers I have had over the years at Arwachin International for their encouragement and my parents, my greatest teachers, who have always been by my side with their unwavering motivation and support.

My Journey from Arwachin International School to the Ritsumeikan University
By Sakshi Gupta , 12A1
Since I started learning Japanese in grade 2 at my Alma mater, Arwachin International School , I have always dreamt of building my future in Japan. As a result, it was my ambition to study Community and Regional Policy Studies at the Ritsumeikan University in Japan.
In order to secure a place at Ritsumeikan University, I had to go through two screenings. The criteria for the first screening was to write three essays on three different topics strictly following the word limit. Since these essays are incisively analyzed, therefore, I made sure to be honest while writing the essays without plagiarizing any data from any source. Apart from this, I put a great emphasis on my language and vocabulary throughout my essays conveying my views and opinions sincerely on the topic. Due to this, I was able to clear my first screening successfully.
For the second screening, an interview was held on Skype by two professors who raised questions based on the essays. Therefore, I thoroughly revised my essays and overhauled my communication skills making sure to have an undisputable confidence while answering my essays.
As a result, I successfully cleared my second screening and got enrolled in the Ritsumeikan University. In addition to this, I am scheduled to receive the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology of Japan (MEXT) for the 2018 University-Recommended Monbukagakusho (MEXT) Scholarship for Overseas International Degree- seeking students.
I am highly grateful to my parents, teachers, School management and friends for their incessant support and encouragement.
Cheers to new beginnings and adventures!
JENESYS 2018
We all have our beliefs, our prejudices about several different things. It is only when we experience these things that we get to know the reality, many a times, breaking our notions to give out something even more lovable. We four students of Arwachin international school faced a similar experience.
We four, ie Shruti Kishore, Deepal Yadav, Rishab Dandriyal and Anushriya Roy, being selected for a Japanese cultural exchange programme got a chance to experience the culture of Japan from 20th March, 2018 to 27th March, 2018. Before going all we knew about Japan was from our books, and was mostly read and forgotten. But when we went there, we got to know Japan by our own experience which would always stay with us in our hearts. Earlier, we knew how punctual and polite the people of Japan were but it was only after a seven days tour to Japan that we felt how open hearted and free spirited they are. All our notions of them being dull and boring were shattered after we experienced an extremely warm and kind welcome by them. This is the reason because of which, when we returned to India, we not only had an unforgettable experience but also an unbreakable relation. It gave us an opportunity to showcase the rich Indian culture and heritage in the world platform.
Since we had gone there in an environment- related programme, we attended lectures at the Hydrogen power centre and Fukuoka institute of health and environmental sciences. We all were enthralled by the knowledge we were enriched with.
This programme offered a valuable opportunity to us to directly interact with the Governor of Fukuoka. We asked many questions related to the present condition of our ecology, environment and ways to protect it. We were even given a platform to showcase our talents and Indian culture where we four not only represented our school but also our nation .The best part of the trip was the home stay where we all learnt about the Japanese culture and tradition by staying with a Japanese family. We leant origami, ikebana, mountain trekking and many more. We even participated in the tea ceremony and the kimono- wearing organized by the Fukuoka high school students. It was surely an unforgettable experience for us.
We are highly grateful to JICE, Japanese government and our own Arwachin international school for giving us a lifetime opportunity which surely would prove to be a step forward in our lives. All this was possible only due to our respected director, Mr. Arun Sharma, honorable principal and teachers. And special thanks to Mrs. Jain who taught us Japanese through all these years and made our dream come true.

The authorial wisdom and acumen of the coaches went a long way into helping their team to play with precision to the best of their ability. It was the gradual unfolding of their capabilities that led them into winning one match after the other, until they reached the finals. But as a team they did not get carried away by the long spree of winning against other teams of India. They, rather evolved as more responsible & meticulous achievers and secured the second position all over India with a silver medal around their necks.
